A Call for Accountability: Demanding a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations against the Senate President, by Dr. Tukur Madu Yemi

Fellow Nigerians,

The recent allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment levelled against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan are deeply disturbing. These accusations strike at the very foundation of justice, human dignity, and the integrity of our legislative institution. In any democratic society that upholds the rule of law, no individual—regardless of status or political office—should be beyond scrutiny, particularly when confronted with such grave allegations.

It is especially concerning that these allegations have been made against the Senate President—the third highest-ranking official in the land and the head of the legislative arm of government. As the leader of an institution entrusted with making laws, ensuring checks and balances, and upholding democratic principles, the Senate President must be held to the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and moral conduct. The credibility of the National Assembly, and by extension, the entire democratic process, is at stake.

As concerned citizens committed to justice and democratic values, we demand a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into these claims. To ensure the credibility and integrity of this process, the Senate President must step aside pending the conclusion of the investigation. This is not merely a matter of individual accountability but a test of our nation’s commitment to fairness, due process, and the principles of ethical governance.

Sexual harassment, intimidation, and abuse of power have no place in a just society, and they must not be tolerated within the highest legislative body of our country. To ignore or trivialize these allegations would set a dangerous precedent—one that emboldens impunity and erodes public trust in our institutions. Democracy thrives on transparency and accountability, and we must collectively insist that our leaders adhere to the highest ethical and moral standards.

We call upon the relevant authorities, civil society organisations, and the Nigerian public to remain vigilant and resolute in ensuring that this matter is handled with the seriousness it deserves. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Those found culpable, irrespective of their position, must be held accountable by the law.

Nigeria deserves leaders who lead with integrity and serve as exemplars of justice and accountability. Let us stand together in demanding truth, fairness, and the protection of fundamental human rights in our governance.
