What remains is the execution of the proposed solutions.
One of the primary concerns underscored is the severe crises gripping the North, encompassing escalating insecurity and deepening economic adversities. For instance, the emergence of insurgent factions – Boko Haram, banditry, kidnappings, illegal mining activities, ethnic and religious tensions has not only led to loss of lives but has also disrupted economic activities in the region, further exacerbating poverty. These crises have resulted in the displacement of millions of individuals, exacerbating widespread hunger and poverty in the area. It is imperative for the North to confront these challenges proactively and refrain from solely attributing blame to external factors.
Moreover, the discussion sheds light on the marginalization of the North at the federal level during President Tinubu’s tenure. This marginalization has manifested in various forms, including inequitable distribution of resources and absence of representation in crucial decision-making processes and deliberate creation of tension among the elites. For instance, corruption among political figures has depleted public resources that could have been utilized for developmental endeavours, further deepening poverty and underdevelopment. The traditional institution is weakened, and the youth are vulnerable to exploitation by malevolent individuals and extremists. Immediate reforms are thus imperative to address these systemic issues and pave the way for a more prosperous future for the region.
Furthermore, there is a looming threat of Northern territories being unjustly seized under false pretenses, posing a risk of internal colonization. Recent attempts to acquire land in the North under dubious circumstances serve as a stark reminder of the need to safeguard the region’s resources and heritage. To shield against such encroachments, it is vital to take legal actions and foster regional solidarity to resist external pressures.
