The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarking on a two weeks warning strike, lead to the halt of on-going exams and lectures in public universities.
This is not a new thing to the federal government and the universities because the issue only takes a deep breath and then bounces back to action.
Meanwhile, the sudden strike came after several warnings from ASUU, nobody can tell when or how the academic problems in Nigeria will be drawn to an end, as we see how ASUU always showed red eyes to the federal government over their cemented demands while the government likely pays lesser attention to them.
The ASUU claim that their action is all about the future of the Nigerian students but see how the students are struggling behind every strike especially when it comes to the time of examinations.
Although the statement of the ASUU President seems to be a little bit convincing, our major concern is how this association will find a way of expressing their demands without embarking on strike that academically affects students. There should be another way of resolving this issue.
It’s very unfortunate that Nigerian education system is annihilating day by day where the government and ASUU are having misunderstandings almost every year which in turn affect the students of the various universities in Nigeria.
Students that are studying in the universities came from different part of Nigeria, some are from the first-class family while some are not. Some of the students don’t have any choice but to stay in their various hostels during the strike because they cannot meet their financial needs to travel to their destinations so the issue of a strike is mostly affecting the students.
The ongoing strike follows the decision of the federal government to stop the salaries of lecturers who have not enrolled for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). Can this system help a student? This is a big question that we have to ask ourselves.
We strongly call on the government and ASUU to implement the agreement and resolve on this issue that has been lingering for more than a decade for the betterment of the students and Nigeria at large.
