State governor increases minimum wage to ₦104,000, boosts salaries for doctors, teachers

The governor has approved a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for civil servants, a significant increase from the previous ₦76,000. The announcement was made by Governor Hope Uzodimma on Tuesday night during a meeting with labour union leaders.

Uzodimma also raised the minimum wage for doctors from ₦215,000 to ₦503,000, and for tertiary institution teachers from ₦119,000 to ₦222,000.

The governor acknowledged the various challenges his administration and citizens have faced, including insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardships, and issues related to the minimum wage and fuel subsidy removal. He stressed that fair compensation for workers boosts productivity, supports families, and stimulates the local economy.

Uzodimma highlighted that the state’s internally generated revenue has grown from ₦400 million to over ₦3 billion monthly, and its debt has been reduced from over ₦280 billion in 2020 to less than ₦100 billion. He also noted that the removal of the petrol subsidy has created opportunities the government is working to ensure to benefit the wider population.

The governor confirmed that the state will begin paying the final batch of gratuities, totaling ₦16 billion, to pensioners starting August 27.

In response, Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, called the wage a “victory for the entire workforce” and praised the governor for positioning the state among the highest in minimum wage levels.

He assured that workers would respond with improved diligence and efficiency.
