Police reverse earlier denial, confirm abduction of Christian worshippers in Kaduna
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the abduction of Christian worshippers in Kaduna State, making a reversal from its earlier position that appeared to downplay reports of the incident.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police acknowledged that armed men attacked a community in Kajuru Local Government Area, abducting worshippers during church activities. The confirmation followed further intelligence gathering and on-ground assessments after initial comments by police authorities created confusion over whether the abduction had actually occurred.
Police authorities explained that the earlier response was based on preliminary information and not intended to dismiss reports from residents and community leaders. They said updated findings have now verified that several worshippers were taken by the attackers.
The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical and intelligence units to the area, working alongside other security agencies to rescue the abducted victims and track down the perpetrators.
While the police have yet to release an official figure for the number of people abducted, security sources say rescue operations are ongoing, with intensified patrols across surrounding forests and suspected hideouts.
The incident has heightened concerns over insecurity in parts of Kaduna State, as residents and religious groups call for stronger protection of worship centres and vulnerable communities. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as operations continue.
