Essential grain prices decline in 2026, bringing relief to consumers

Story by Zainab Suleiman Sabo (Student at the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Gujba, Yobe State)

Residents of Damaturu Local Government Area in Yobe State are breathing a collective sigh of relief following the reduction in the prices of staple grains this week.

At Damaturu Grains Market, a tale of two sentiments unfolds – buyers revel in the joy of cheaper staples, while sellers tread with cautious optimism, as prices of maize, millet, beans, sorghum, and other essentials decline noticeably.

According to a recent market survey, the price of old maize ranges between ₦35,000 and ₦40,000 per bag.

As of last month, prices were slightly higher, with old maize selling between ₦37,000 and ₦39,000 per bag.
New millet prices are fluctuating, currently standing at ₦29,000 – ₦31,000. White beans (big) cost between ₦65,000 – ₦70,000, while red beans (big) go for ₦70,000 – ₦75,000.

However, rice prices remain steady at ₦130,000 – ₦135,000, while sorghum is obtained at ₦21,000 – ₦22,000, one of its best prices lately.

Accompanying Reactions

Sellers and farmers are bittersweet about the current prices. While some are grateful for the improved harvest and steady supply, other traders are worried about shrinking profits.

“Customers are happy, but our margins are tight,” says Malam Dahiru Sai’d, a grain trader in Damaturu Market.

“Still, business is picking up, so we’re thankful.
