CAF confirms Senegal’s 2025 AFCON victory, imposes sanctions on Morocco, Senegal
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially dismissed Morocco’s petition to strip Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title, confirming the Teranga Lions as champions following the controversial final in Morocco.
While Senegal kept the trophy, CAF imposed heavy fines and suspensions on both nations for misconduct during and after the match.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board ruled that Senegal will remain the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, rejecting claims by host nation Morocco that the match should be overturned due to unrest involving Senegalese players and officials.
The ruling follows scenes of tension during the dramatic final, which briefly saw Senegalese players and officials boycott play after disputed refereeing decisions.

In its decision, CAF stated that while Senegal’s actions breached disciplinary rules, they were not sufficient to invalidate the match result.
“The Disciplinary Board finds no legal grounds to annul the final or withdraw the title,” CAF noted in its official ruling.
However, CAF handed Senegal a total fine of $615,000, broken down as follows:
• $300,000 for supporters’ improper conduct
• $300,000 for unsporting behaviour by players and officials
• $15,000 for misconduct resulting from five yellow cards in the final.
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was also punished, receiving a five-match suspension from CAF competitions and a $100,000 fine for bringing the game into disrepute.
Two Senegalese players, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, were each banned for two CAF matches after being found guilty of unsporting behaviour towards the referee.
Morocco was not spared either. CAF fined the Moroccan Football Federation $315,000 for multiple infractions, including:
• $200,000 for inappropriate conduct by stadium ball boys
• $100,000 for players and staff invading the Referees’ Restricted Area
• $15,000 for fans using laser pointers
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi received a two-match CAF suspension, with one match suspended for a year.
Midfielder Ismael Saibari was handed a three-match ban and fined $100,000 for unsporting conduct.

Despite the sanctions, CAF’s decision brings closure to one of the most controversial AFCON finals in recent history, firmly cementing Senegal’s status as 2025 AFCON champions.
