US Ambassador Richard Mills exits Nigeria after Trump orders global recall of envoys
Richard Mills has officially ended his tenure as the United States ambassador to Nigeria following a sweeping recall of American diplomats ordered by President Donald Trump.
The directive, which affects more than two dozen countries across the globe, marks one of the most extensive diplomatic reshuffles of Trump’s presidency. Africa has been the hardest hit region, with several US envoys recalled as part of the move.
Mills’ departure brings an end to his stewardship of US–Nigeria relations during a period marked by security cooperation, economic engagement, and regional diplomacy. The US Embassy in Abuja has yet to announce a successor or clarify whether an interim chargé d’affaires will be appointed.
Washington has not provided detailed reasons for the mass recall, but analysts see it as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to realign US foreign policy and assert tighter control over diplomatic missions abroad.
The development has sparked speculation about possible shifts in US engagement with key African partners, including Nigeria, which remains a strategic ally in West Africa.
