The National Union of Yobe State Students (NUYOSS) yesterday advised parents on precautionary measures to curtail the menace of rape on their children.

The National Vice Present ll, Hafsat Yusuf gave the advice in an interview with our correspondent in Damaturu.

Yusuf said the decision to advise parents became necessary due to the fact that the majority of rape victims were minors who could hardly help themselves.

She said mothers who were naturally closer to their children should develop a strong cordial relationship to enable the children to confide in the mothers of any event in their lives on a daily basis.

She said children especially female should always be dressed properly to maintain the dignity of womanhood and be taught to report to their parents anybody who tried to touch their private parts.

“Female children should be discouraged from sitting on the laps of males.

“And on no account should female children be left under the care of private male teachers, family drivers, male neighbours, or security guards.”, she stressed.

Yusuf also advised that children should not be allowed to watch pornographic films.

“They should be monitored constantly and closely in order to prevent them from watching adults movies in television sets or with their mobile phones.”, she added.

She commended Governor Mai Mala Buni’s led administration for its courageous efforts of addressing the menace of rape in the state.

She also appealed for the government to consider the survivors’ welfare socially and educationally by providing scholarships to study abroad where they can re-build their careers and realise their potentialities.

Such a gesture according to her would help the survivors to recover from the trauma of the unpleasant memories.

“The rape survivors in most cases missed school and companionship. They often prepare to be alone because of the alienation they expect from their friends and members of society.”, she added.
