Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos
A renowned infectious disease expert and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in the United States, Dr Anthony Fauci, has hinted that America’s hard-hit COVID-19 patients may get the first doses of a successful vaccine by late December or January.
According to the expert, Americans would know their fate whether or not a safe and effective vaccine would be available after mentioned leading pharmaceutical firms, Pfizer and Moderna who have been working on the possibility of coming out with a vaccine for the deadly disease as quickly as possible.
He added that the first stage of COVID-19 trial vaccine should be out within the next few weeks.
The country on Thursday recorded about 74,000 new cases of COVID-19 infections making it still the epicentre with 8.9 million cases and 228,194 deaths since the wake of the virus in the U.S.
However, the expert warned that despite a breakthrough on the availability of the vaccine return to normalcy might be slow.
Recall that the U.S. had in late July called for volunteers of vaccine candidates with the two pharmaceutical firms.
According to the source, Moderna hinted on the level of development to that effect saying on Thursday that it is “on track to deliver interim data from its large, late-stage trial next month.”
While data from Pfizer are expected in early or mid-November which be reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
