Disney has confirmed that the late Chadwick Boseman’s role will not be recast in the forthcoming Black Panther sequel.
Boseman, who died from colon cancer earlier this year, played the lead character of King T’Challa in the hit 2018 Marvel movie.
According to a tweet by the studio, Black Panther 2 will “explore the world of Wakanda & the rich characters introduced in the first film.”
Like the first, Black Panther 2 will be written and directed by Creed’s Ryan Coogler. It is expected to be released on July 8, 2022.

The news was part of a slate of announcements during Disney’s Investor Showcase, which included the revelation that the company would be released 10 Marvel series and 10 Star Wars series within the next few years.
These include Lando, based on the adventures of Star Wars’ Lando Calrissian, Andor, based on Rogue One’s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), and the Mandalorian spin-off Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson as Jedi Ahsoka Tano.
Among the Marvel projects announced were a Fantastic Four movie, directed by Jon Watts, a Guardians of the Galaxy festive special, to be released in 2021, and I Am Groot, a Guardians spin-off focussing on Vin Diesel’s character.
Boseman’s final film role comes in the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is released on Netflix on 18 December.
