The first batch of 233 students drawn from all the political wards of Yobe State, who were offered a scholarship by Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration will be leaving for India tomorrow to study their first degrees in various disciplines.
This no doubt is about providing bright young minds with the chance to sharpen their academic skills at some of the best Universities around the world while developing their foreign language and intellectual skills, and priming them through overseas experience to lead a new generation of scholars, innovators, scientists and of course leaders.
With an education in Nigeria being bisected with myriad problems and not much is done to salvage the situation, this development may in the future help the State shift to a knowledge-based economy and bridge the gap of manpower deficit particularly in the health sector.
Interestingly, 80 per cent of the beneficiaries who made the list are children of poor people without any political connections. Unlike in the past when only children of the political elites benefitted from the exercise.
Some of the courses they will undergo include: Petroleum Engineering, Renal Dialysis among other science courses.
