Suspected US missile warhead discovered in Niger community

Residents of Zugurma community in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State were gripped by fear on Monday after a missile-like object was discovered in a nearby bush, triggering an emergency response from security agencies.

Local sources said the object was spotted by residents while going about their normal activities. Concerned about its unusual appearance and potential danger, community members promptly alerted security authorities.

A source familiar with the incident disclosed that the object was initially suspected to be a missile warhead, with early speculation suggesting it might be a component of a Tomahawk missile allegedly linked to recent United States military operations. However, its exact identity and origin have yet to be confirmed.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the discovery was reported on January 5, 2026, at about 2:00pm.

“On January 5, 2026, at about 2pm, a report was received from the Zugurma area of Mashegu LGA that some residents sighted an object suspected to be a missile in the bush,” Abiodun said.

He noted that police operatives from the Ibbi Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they cordoned off and secured the area to prevent residents from gaining access.

“The police operatives moved to the scene, secured the area, while the EOD-CBRN unit of the Command was deployed for investigation, assessment and recovery of the object,” he added.

Abiodun explained that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit has taken custody of the item for detailed examination.

He stressed that investigations are ongoing to determine the nature of the object, its origin, and how it ended up in the community, assuring that further updates would be made public as the probe continues.
