The court, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other concerned authorities have been called upon to as a matter of urgency intervene in the ongoing dispute between Whiteplains British School and the First Bank in Abuja before it further escalates.
Briefing newsmen in Abuja, the Chairman/CEO of the school, Dr Francis Nwufor said the appeal became necessary as some people in the company of heavily armed security officers comprising soldiers and policemen who claimed to be representing First Bank came to the school at Jabi recently and started erecting their own fences and even sealed the entrance with blocks in the name of claiming the property which legally belongs to him.
He said, “The bank gave us to build the school with a pay back period that will lapse in 2019, and despite the economic crunch being experienced, the management has been paying in tranches with plans to ensure that it meets up the deadline. So I wonder what could have led to this harassment.”
He said the first time they came with their threat, they came with about 40 policemen, and subsequently, he went to court who is now looking at the matter, but yet to conclude and pass a verdict, adding that he had also approached EFCC and lodged complaint that the bank defrauded him when they said they had paid N200 million into his account as part of the loan, only for them to take back N288 million without informing him, claiming to have taken that for some charges payable by him.
“In order to be sure that the land was not also sold to First Bank also, the court had summoned the wife of the man who sold the land to me, but now late, and she testified that they only sold the land to me.
“As am talking to you now, they have blocked the main gate with concrete block. We can’t even enter or drive with anything, and they have ended up driving everybody from the place. Now they are saying they want to take over.
“I want them to obey the court order, that the status quo be maintained in the mean time. It is a school and as such, the children must be allowed to go about their academic activities without fear,” he said.
