Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos

Mrs Lauretta Onochie, Special Assistant on Social Media to the President on Tuesday has been rejected by the Senate as a nominee for the post of National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Her rejection came after huge criticisms from members of the opposition party, civil society organisations and people from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the ground she is a card-carrying member of the ruling.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in October 2020 written to the Senate to confirm her appointment.

Responding to the petitions against her, she said it was because she is known to be non-partisan and someone who insists on due process.

However, she insisted that since President Buhari won his second term in 2019, she has removed herself from all political activities adding that she had nothing to do with any political organisation and did not partake in APC’s recent validation exercise.
