Nigeria has undergone negative changes from what it once was — Senior Lecturer, Dr Safana

In a world where success often comes with compromise, Dr Suleiman Ibrahim Safana, a senior lecturer in the English Department at Al-Qalam University, stands out as a beacon of integrity, dedication, and achievement.
Dr Safana, a PhD holder, shared his inspiring journey with Neptune Prime, reflecting on his life, career, and perspectives on Nigeria. He attended primary and secondary schools in Zaria, Kaduna State, before moving on to Isa Kaita College of Education, where he graduated with a first-class NCE in English Geography. He later earned his B. A in English, followed by an M.A and a PhD at Bayero University, Kano. Today, he dedicates himself to academic excellence at Al-Qalam University, nurturing the next generation of scholars.
While reflecting on the nation’s transformations, Dr Safana noted, “The Nigeria we knew yesterday is not the same as what we see today, everything has changed, and unfortunately, many of these changes are negative. Things have been turned upside down.”
Yet, amidst challenges, his message to young Nigerians remains clear and unwavering: integrity and mindset are key. “Young people should change their mindset. They should be good Nigerians, maintain their integrity, and work toward creating a better environment for future generations,” he advised.
Dr Safana also offered encouragement to students pursuing their dreams. “You are here as a student, doing what is expected of you. Keep it up,” he said.
His words underscore the value of hard work, perseverance, and ethical conduct as the foundation for personal and national growth.
Through his journey, Dr Safana exemplifies the power of dedication, continuous learning, and moral fortitude. His story serves as a reminder that achievement is not measured merely by titles or degrees, but by the positive impact one leaves on society.
Neptune Prime: Please can you introduce yourself?
Dr Safana: My name is Suleiman Ibrahim Safana from the English Department here at Al-Qalam University. I am a PhD holder and a senior lecturer.
Neptune Prime: Can you briefly tell us about your life journey and academic career?
Dr Safana: Like every other person, I attended primary and secondary school. I obtained a First Class NCE in English and Geography from Isa Kaita College of Education. I later earned my B. A in English, my M.A, and my PhD from Bayero University, Kano. I am currently a full-time academic at Al-Qalam University.
Neptune Prime: How would you describe Nigeria when you were younger compared to what it is today?
Dr Safana: The Nigeria we knew in the past is not the same Nigeria we are experiencing today. Everything has changed and, unfortunately, many of these changes are negative rather than positive.
Neptune Prime: What advice would you give to young Nigerians today?

Dr Safana: Young people need to change their mindset. What is happening in the country today is not encouraging, but they should remain good Nigerians, maintain their integrity, and work towards creating a better environment and a better nation for future generations.

Dr Safana: I want to encourage students like you to keep doing what is expected of you. From what I know, you are on the right path, and I advise you to remain consistent and focused.
