Kannywood’s Adam Zango, Ado Gwanja face possible jail time over deaths in Niger Republic

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Facts are beginning to emerge over last weeks’ accident in Niger Republic very close to the capital, Niamey by two prominent Kannywood singers, producers and directors, Adam A Zango and Ado Gwanja.

The two popular singers were said to have been invited by a rich businessman in Niamey to perform at his wedding ceremony. When the two Kannywood celebrities entered Niger and found it difficult to locate their way to Niamey, they were said to have hired a driver who was so reckless, resulting in a terrible accident that killed four people on the spot.

According to some eyewitnesses, instead of waiting to facilitate the dead bodies to the hospital or their families, Zango and Ado Gwanja were said to have proceeded to Niamey on grounds that the person who invited them already paid in advance, and fans, in their thousands, were also said to have assembled waiting for them.

Neptune Prime’s effort to speak to both of them was not successful. An attempt to get a comment from Ahmad Sarari, President of MOPPAN in Kano and Ismail Afakallah Executive Director Films and Censorship Board, Kano was not successful. In fact, it was gathered that both Afakallah and Ahmad Sarari are not on speaking terms with Zango and Ado Gwanja.

Disappointed by the attitude of Zango and Ado Gwanja, some human rights activists and youth leaders in Niger Republic quickly addressed a press conference calling on the arrest and prosecution of Adam Zango and his co-traveller. But to give them a soft landing, some of those close to the businessman took them to the families of the deceased where they paid their condolences and apologised for their attitude. But the family of the deceased are insisting that they must be compensated because, according to them, the two artists are rich, which is why they are yet to be allowed to come back to Nigeria.
