Bauchi traditional, religious leaders commit to improving menstrual hygiene management for girls

Religious and traditional rulers in Bauchi, Ningi and Katagum Local Government Areas of Bauchi state have pledged to take lessons learnt at a one-day engagement and sensitization on the management of menstrual hygiene organized by Plan International with funding from Kimberly Clark Corporation.
The engagement meeting was put together to solicit supports from key players in the community who can monitor and also educate their subjects and followers.
An Islamic Cleric, Dr Umar Mohammed Liman, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in Katagum local government, Reverend Bukata Luka and the District head of Azare, Magaji Dahuwa Abdulkadir who participated in the sensitization event stresses the need for parents to properly educate their children and wards on the importance of menstrual hygiene adequately.

The leaders also urged the government to provide sanitary towels for girls and women, alongside clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene facilities in public places, especially in schools.
They noted with dismay how the lack of clean toilets hampers the education of the girl child, which in turn leads to a high number of out of school girls.
The engagement meeting is one out of the series of activities by Plan International with funding from Kimberly Clark Corporation to reach two hundred thousand individuals in Ningi, Bauchi and Katagum local government areas of Bauchi state, targeting 63% of the female population.
