A Plea for Caution: An open letter to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, by Engr. Bello Gwarzo Abdullahi, FNSE

“Kano’s contributions to Nigeria’s political evolution is well known and are beyond the reproach of adversity or criticism.

The cultivation of radical politics and progressive affiliations have made Kano the hub of activism and political awareness in Nigeria. Kano perhaps more than any other metropolis, has shaped the political culture in Nigeria to the extent that it serves as the barometer of politics in the country today.

Kano people may seem busy with their everyday chores and pursuit of their livelihoods, but they are also attuned to the happenings around and beyond their precinct, as evidenced by their avid consumption of news about current events.”
Ambassador Usman Sarki

Your Excellency,
I deliberately start this letter with the excerpt from an article authored in May 2023 by His Excellency Ambassador Usman Sarki, titled “In Praise of Kano, the Hope and Glory of Nigeria,” which eloquently elucidates the contributions of Kano to Nigeria’s development. Kano’s historical significance is deeply rooted in its multifaceted roles across various spheres. From historical, economic, social, political, religious, to cultural dimensions, Kano has consistently been at the forefront of shaping Nigeria’s path.

Throughout history, Kano has been a beacon of progressive change. For instance, during the first republic and beyond, the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) led by the late Malam Aminu Kano spearheaded reforms that aimed at uplifting the masses and advocating for social justice.

This dedication to progressive ideals has been a hallmark of Kano’s political landscape, setting it apart as a trailblazer in championing social causes.

In the economic realm, Kano’s position as a commercial hub has not wavered over time. The bustling markets like Kurmi Market and Kantin Kwari Market have served as vibrant centers of trade, connecting various regions within Nigeria and beyond.

These markets have sustained generations of entrepreneurs, symbolizing Kano’s economic resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. The city’s commercial prowess is a testament to its enduring legacy as a key player in the economic development of Nigeria.

Furthermore, Kano’s intellectual and cultural contributions have enriched Nigeria’s heritage. Institutions like Bayero University and historical sites such as the Gidan Rumfa stand as testaments to the city’s intellectual vibrancy.

Kano’s cultural diversity and artistic legacy have influenced generations of scholars and artists, shaping the intellectual landscape of not just Nigeria but the entire West African region.

In terms of politics and social cohesion, Kano has been a pillar of stability and political awareness. The city’s residents are known for their political acumen and active participation in national elections. Moreover, Kano’s tradition of promoting peace and coexistence has fostered a harmonious living environment for centuries, setting a commendable example for peacebuilding efforts in the region.

As the political leader of Kano, Your Excellency, you shoulder an immense responsibility in steering the city through the prevailing political tribulations. The current economic adversities, potential threats to democratic integrity, and the imperative for inclusive governance necessitate resolute action.

The leadership in Kano plays a crucial role in steering the city towards sustainable development, leveraging its rich history and cultural heritage to pave the way for a brighter future for its residents and the nation as a whole. It is crucial for you to harmonize your efforts with the aspirations of the populace and strive to uphold the democratic tenets that form the bedrock of Nigeria’s political framework.

To realize this objective, and as an engineer well-versed in optimization, it is essential for you to consider the objective function and constraints in order to devise an effective solution. Given the current circumstances, collective engagement is paramount to avert the nation’s slide into authoritarianism.

You possess the requisite capabilities to accomplish this by aligning yourself with the opposition forces. The recent defections into the ruling party represent a detrimental trend that portends no favorable outcomes.

Your Excellency, the moment necessitates prudent and strategic leadership. By championing the tenets of democracy, fostering economic advancement, and cultivating social harmony, you can guide Kano towards a future characterized by progress and unity. In a democracy, the aspirations of the populace hold paramount significance.

History will scrutinize your actions, and it is within your grasp to forge a legacy that embodies the principles of justice, equity, and advancement.

The journey ahead is formidable, yet with sagacity and unwavering commitment, Kano can persist as a beacon of hope and progress for Nigeria.
