Adamawa Gubernatorial Election Rerun: Interpol invites INEC REC

The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) has invited the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Barrister Hudu Yunusa-Ari, for questioning regarding his role in the Adamawa gubernatorial election rerun.

In an invitation letter dated April 27, 2023, and signed by Interpol Vice President and Head of the National Central Bureau (NCB), AIG Garba Umar, the Bureau asked Yunusa-Ari to report to its office on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 10 am. The Bureau also asked Yunusa-Ari to contact CSP Jolugbo Moses.

Part of the letter stated that “this Bureau is investigating a case of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, violation of the oath of neutrality, impersonating a collation/returning officer, disobedience to lawful orders/directives, impersonation and announcing a false governorship result of the just-concluded Adamawa State governorship supplementary election of April 15, 2023, in which your name featured prominently.

“In view of the above, you are hereby requested to report at the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja office, Police Force Headquarters, Shehu Shagari Way, Central area, Abuja, to interview the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 1000 hours.”

Meanwhile, it was reported that the Nigeria Police Force has arrested Yunusa-Ari.

Yunusa-Ari was arrested when he honoured the invitation before the Police committee investigating the circumstances that led to the announcement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate as the winner of the Adamawa gubernatorial elections during the recently concluded supplementary elections.

Confirming this, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said, “Barrister Ari, who was arrested by the Police Election Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Team in Abuja on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, is currently in Police custody and is being grilled to ascertain the motives and motivations behind his alleged improper actions during the supplementary elections in Adamawa State.”
