Adeleke swears in Osun chairpersons, councillors; APC raises allegations
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has sworn in the newly elected local government chairpersons and councillors in the state.
The ceremony, which took place in Osogbo on Sunday, February 23, was described by the governor as a significant step in the state’s democratic development. He emphasized that the election held on Saturday, February 22, adhered to due process.
In his address, Adeleke urged the officials to focus on good governance while warning against any attempts to seize council secretariats by force. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for resisting efforts by certain groups to destabilize the state.
Reflecting on the election process, the governor noted that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) had followed all the necessary legal steps. He affirmed that the commission had given proper notice of the election a year in advance and complied with all legal requirements, leading to the successful election of new chairpersons and councillors.
While acknowledging the legal challenges surrounding the election, Adeleke expressed confidence that his administration acted within the law. He reassured the public that the facts are now clear and that they were on the right side of the law in line with the constitution.

The governor also extended his gratitude to the people of Osun for their support, pledging that his administration would remain focused on their welfare. He commended OSIEC, security agencies, and state officials for ensuring the success of the election.
Adeleke strongly advised the newly elected officials to avoid confrontations at the local government secretariats, highlighting the ongoing legal processes aimed at resolving the leadership disputes. He also urged them to stay clear of the secretariats to prevent clashes with those who had forcefully taken control, with police assistance.
He referenced a ruling from the Osun State High Court, which had confirmed vacancies in both the chairmanship and councillorship positions before the election, assuring that his administration would rely on the judiciary to remove those illegally occupying the secretariats.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, Hashim Abioye, announced that 30 chairmanship candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had won, with the PDP securing all 332 councillor seats in the state.
In response, Kola Olabisi, the media director of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, accused Abioye of fabricating the election results. He claimed that no election had taken place in the state and criticized OSIEC for making Osun an object of ridicule. Olabisi declared that the results were illegitimate and would not stand, asserting that the election was a “charade” and that the constitution would address the matter.
