No Apology, No Peace: Husband seeks divorce over wife’s refusal to say “sorry”

A Nigerian man has approached a court seeking dissolution of his marriage, claiming that his wife’s persistent refusal to apologize has made peaceful co-existence impossible.

According to the report, the husband alleged that repeated disagreements in the home always escalated because his wife would not admit wrongdoing or say the words “I am sorry,” even when he felt she was clearly at fault.

He argued that the absence of apology created constant tension, emotional distance, and unresolved conflict in the marriage, describing it as a major source of “marital cruelty.”

The case highlights a growing debate in family and relationship circles about the role of apology and forgiveness in sustaining marriage, with experts noting that refusal to apologize can deepen resentment and weaken emotional bonds if not addressed early.

While courts generally require stronger legal grounds such as cruelty or irreconcilable breakdown of marriage, the case reflects how everyday communication issues can escalate into legal disputes when reconciliation fails.

The matter is still under consideration.
