AFCON: Egypt advance to quarterfinals with 3-1 victory over Benin Republic

Egypt booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Benin Republic 3-1 in an entertaining Round of 16 encounter on Monday night.

The opening half was a tense affair, with both sides adopting a cautious approach that resulted in few clear chances and a goalless scoreline at the break. The contest, however, burst into life after the restart.

Marwan Attia broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, unleashing a superb long-range strike into the top-left corner after being set up by Mohamed Hany. Benin responded positively and drew level in the 83rd minute, as Jodel Dossou slotted home from close range to give his side renewed hope.

With the match heading into extra time, Egypt reasserted their dominance. Defender Yasser Ibrahim put the Pharaohs back in front in the 97th minute, rising highest to head in a corner delivered by Attia.

Benin struggled to find another response, and Egypt sealed the win in dramatic fashion deep into stoppage time. Captain Mohamed Salah capped the performance with a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box in the 120+4th minute, finishing off a swift counterattack assisted by Zizo.

The victory keeps Egypt’s title ambitions alive as they advance to the quarterfinals, where they will look to maintain their momentum in the quest for another AFCON crown.
