Africa Day 2023: Google showcases virtual art galleries, African music celebrations

Google is set to commemorate Africa Day with a series of programs and activities that celebrate the continent’s rich cultural heritage and promote global participation.

Olumide Balogun, Interim Lead at Google Nigeria, announced the initiative, stating that Africa Day marks the establishment of the African Union and honours Africa’s pursuit of unity.

The program includes the introduction of six new pocket galleries on Google Arts and Culture. These galleries, curated by esteemed partners from Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, will provide an immersive virtual exhibition experience, allowing individuals to explore Africa’s cultural scene from any location.

Among the partners involved are Yemisi Shyllon Museum, Terra Kulture, Mohammed Amin Foundation, National Museums of Kenya, and the University of Pretoria, each presenting unique exhibitions that celebrate their respective regions and showcase Africa’s diverse cultural heritage.

In previous years, YouTube Music has organized the Africa Day Concert, highlighting both established and up-and-coming African music talents. This year, YouTube Music will unveil an Africa Day playlist featuring popular and trending songs from various African artists.

The public will also have the opportunity to submit their favourite African songs via YouTube Shorts, with the chance for them to be included on the playlist.

Additionally, the celebrations will spotlight African storytelling traditions through the “Stories and Storytellers of Africa” initiative on YouTube. This initiative will showcase a wide collection of African movies and series, paying tribute to the creators who bring these narratives to life.

Furthermore, YouTube will collaborate with content creators for the “Showcase Your Africa” project, allowing them to share their unique perspectives on Africa, offering a glimpse into the continent’s diversity.

Balogun emphasized that Africa Day symbolizes progress, unity, and the vibrant cultures that define the continent. Google is thrilled to amplify these stories and experiences on its platforms.
