Again, police invite NLC President Ajaero, Secretary Ugboaja
The Nigeria Police Force has again summoned Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), alongside Emmanuel Ugboaja, the union’s Secretary General, for further questioning.
This latest invitation, dated August 28, 2024, follows an earlier one that Ajaero honoured just a day prior at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The invitation, signed by CP Rufus Alajide on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, specifies that Ajaero and Ugboaja are to appear for an interview on September 5, 2024.
The purpose of this interview is to continue investigations into allegations of “criminal intimidation, malicious damage to properties, and conducts likely to cause a breach of public peace.”
This follows an earlier interrogation where Ajaero was questioned over serious accusations, including “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.”

Ajaero attended the initial questioning in Abuja on August 29, 2024, accompanied by prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, and other supporters.
After his appearance at the police headquarters, Ajaero returned to the NLC headquarters, where he was met by a large crowd of NLC members who had gathered to show their support. In his address to the members, Ajaero reaffirmed the NLC’s dedication to Nigeria, describing the union as one of the country’s most patriotic organisations.
He emphasized that the labour movement has a long history of fighting for the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers, from the colonial era through the military regime, and assured that the union would not be deterred by the current challenges.
Ajaero acknowledged that the police invitation was part of the hazards of being a labour leader, recalling similar experiences during his earlier years in the movement, including being detained during the regime of late General Sani Abacha in the 1990s.
Despite these challenges, Ajaero remained resolute, stating that the focus of the NLC would remain on advocating for the betterment of Nigerian workers and resisting any attempts to distract the union from its mission.
He also expressed his gratitude to the NLC members who stood by him during this period, both those present at the headquarters and others across the country, highlighting the strong sense of solidarity within the labour movement.
