Ndukwe makes history as first Nigerian to command US Navy war ship

Captain Kelechi Ndukwe’s historic milestone of becoming the first Nigerian to command a United States Navy warship is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and leadership skills honed over a 20-year career in the US Navy.

Ndukwe’s journey began in 2003 when he joined the Navy as an auxiliaries officer after completing his master’s degree in national security and strategy studies from the US Naval War College.

From there, he steadily rose through the ranks, demonstrating his capabilities as a leader and earning the respect of his peers and superiors.

Throughout his career, Ndukwe has served on various warships, gaining valuable experience in different regions such as the Mediterranean Sea, Horn of Africa, Arabian Gulf, and Western Pacific Ocean.

This diverse experience prepared him for his current command of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), a prestigious Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.

Prior to commanding the USS Halsey, Ndukwe led the USS Devastator (MCM 6), a minesweeper stationed in Bahrain from 2013 to 2015.

His successful command of the USS Devastator highlighted his leadership abilities and paved the way for his promotion to Captain and subsequent command of the USS Halsey.
