Akwa Ibom Assembly denies passing bill criminalising affairs with married men
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has denied reports claiming it passed a bill seeking to criminalise sexual relationships with married men in the state.
Reacting to the reports on Tuesday, the Assembly described the claim as false and misleading, clarifying that no such bill was debated, proposed, or passed by the legislature.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Information said the alleged bill did not originate from the Assembly and urged the public to disregard what he described as misinformation circulating on social media and some online platforms.

According to the Assembly, lawmakers remain committed to enacting laws that promote justice, social order, and the protection of fundamental human rights, stressing that any legislation capable of infringing on personal freedoms would undergo thorough scrutiny and public engagement.
The denial followed widespread reactions and public outrage after reports suggested that the state legislature had approved a controversial law targeting women involved in relationships with married men.

The Assembly reassured residents that legislative processes in the state remain transparent and inclusive, adding that citizens would be adequately informed if any bill of such nature were to be formally introduced.
