Lawmakers reject bill to ban consumption of dog meat in Akwa Ibom
A proposed bill aiming to criminalise the consumption of dog meat in Akwa Ibom State has failed to progress after 25 of the 26 lawmakers declined to support it.
Dog meat remains a popular delicacy in Akwa Ibom and neighbouring Cross River, often enjoyed with palm wine. Across towns and villages, vendors freely display and sell dog meat, sometimes garnished with periwinkle and scented leaves.

However, Hon. Uduak Ekpoufot, representing Etinan State Constituency, argued that killing dogs—commonly kept as pets and for security—was primitive and unacceptable. He urged the House to consider stopping the consumption and sale of dog meat.
Despite his push, the motion was unanimously rejected during Wednesday’s plenary. The bill failed at the first reading stage after receiving no seconder, preventing it from proceeding further.
