Al-Qalam Varsity graduates 1,109 students at 17th convocation, honours Aminu Masari, others (Pictures)

Al-Qalam University, Katsina, on Saturday, 24th January 2026, held its 17th convocation ceremony, marking another milestone in the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, moral training, and community development.
A total of 1,109 students were awarded first degrees across 28 academic programmes.
The graduating students completed their studies in various disciplines offered by the university.
A breakdown of the results showed that 18 students graduated with First Class honours, 230 earned Second Class Upper Division, 507 graduated with Second Class Lower Division, 336 received Third Class degrees, while 80 students graduated with pass degrees.
The university also awarded 17 Master’s degrees (MSc/MA) and 11 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, reflecting the institution’s expanding postgraduate programmes and growing research capacity.
The ceremony witnessed the award of degrees to graduating students, the recognition of outstanding academic performance, the crowning of the best reciters (Gwani and Gwana) in the annual Qur’anic Recitation Competition, as well as the presentation of prizes to the overall best graduating students and other top performers.
The winners of the Qur’anic Recitation Competition were each awarded ₦1 million, alongside other special prizes for excellence.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries from within and outside Katsina State, including the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Dr Dikko Umaru Radda; the Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness Dr Abdulmumini Kabir Usman; the Chief Judge of Katsina State, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar; the Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura, and his Deputy, Hon. Abduljalal Haruna Runka, as well as traditional rulers, senior government officials, heads of tertiary institutions, security personnel, lecturers, parents, and students.
A major highlight of the event was the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on two distinguished personalities in recognition of their contributions to public service and religious leadership.
Former Governor of Katsina State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, CFR, was awarded a Doctor of Public Administration (Honoris Causa).
Also honoured was His Royal Highness Eze Abul-Fattah Chima Eze Emetumadito, an Islamic scholar, community leader, and Chief Imam of the Owerri Central Mosque, who received a Doctor of Islamic Studies (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his contributions to Islamic propagation and leadership in South-East Nigeria.

The Special Guest of Honour, the Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, commended the university for its consistent academic progress and contribution to human capital development.
He congratulated the graduating students and encouraged them to apply their knowledge and values in contributing positively to society.
The 17th convocation reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence and the holistic development of its students.
