Anambra Police arrest armed robber during robbery attempt

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber in the course of an attempted robbery in Awka.
The suspect, identified as Nicholas Nweke, was apprehended on December 25, 2025, after police officers responded swiftly to a distress call from a victim who was reportedly struggling with the suspect over a firearm.
According to the police, the suspect attempted to rob the victim in a public area when officers attached to the Central Police Station intervened and overpowered him. During the incident, the suspect allegedly fired his weapon, resulting in injuries to two bystanders.

Items recovered from the suspect include a pump-action rifle, five expended cartridges, a mobile phone, and ₦1,200 in cash. The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment and are said to be in stable condition.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.
The police reiterated their commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state and urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and useful information.
