Tragedy struck in Gombe State as seven travellers lost their lives in a fatal road accident while on their way to attend a wedding ceremony.

The accident occurred on Saturday at Lawanti community in Akko Local Government Area of the state. The victims were reportedly travelling from Lawanti to Maiduguri, Borno State, for a wedding when their vehicle was involved in the crash.

Eyewitnesses said the impact was severe, leaving no survivors among the occupants of the vehicle. The identities of all the victims were not immediately released, but community sources confirmed that the deceased included close relatives of prominent community leaders, throwing the area into deep mourning.

Reacting to the incident, Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In a condolence message, the governor described the incident as heartbreaking and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and the Lawanti community. He prayed for Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear the loss.

Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is yet to issue a detailed report on the cause of the crash, road accidents have remained common during festive periods due to increased travel, speeding, and poor road conditions.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in the state, with residents calling on motorists to exercise caution, especially during long-distance journeys.

Authorities have urged road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives.
