Ancient Idanre Hill: Nature’s masterpiece in Ondo State, by Gift Luckson
Idanre Hill is located in Idanre Town, Ondo State, Southwestern Nigeria. Known locally as “Oke Idanre,” the sight embodies a magnificent cluster of towering hills that are about 3,000 feet above sea level.
Idanre Hill is situated 3000 ft (914.4 meters) above sea level and houses a unique ecosystem into which the cultural landscape has integrated. It also has diverse and variegated ecosystems of flora and fauna. Oke Idanre contains very important biophysical and landform features whose interaction with the physical features created an enduring cultural landscape within the setting.
The hill is among Nigeria’s most spectacular natural and cultural landmarks, combining breathtaking scenery with deep historical and spiritual significance.
History and Heritage
For centuries, the Idanre people lived on top of the hills, where they built homes, shrines, and a functioning kingdom. The ancient hilltop settlement was both a fortress and a spiritual haven, protecting inhabitants from wars and invasions.
The community eventually moved downhill in the 1920s, but the old structures — including the king’s palace, ancient courts, shrines, and burial sites — remain preserved.
Western civilisation was introduced to the ancient city when a team of missionaries led by Rev. Gilbert Carter arrived in the year 1894.
The missionaries built the first primary school in 1896, the clay building of which still stands strong to this day. In 1906, a law court was established. It includes an ancient prison where convicts served their jail terms.

Steps to the Top – There are 660 steps leading up the hill, with five resting points along the way.

Cultural and Tourism Importance
This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on 8 October 2007 in the cultural category to acknowledge its unique mix of natural beauty, ancient architecture, and living traditions. It hosts the annual Mare Festival, celebrating the town’s culture, music, and tourism heritage.
Supernatural Beliefs
Local legend says the hills were once inhabited by supernatural beings who protected the town — a story that still shapes Idanre’s traditional beliefs today.
