Angry mob beats alleged thief to death

A suspected thief has been hacked to death by an enraged crowd venting their displeasure.

According to reports, the event occurred on Wednesday in Makurdi, Benue State, close to Modern Market.

An eyewitness told journalists that the deceased and two accomplices were accused of breaking into a church office, taking goods, and then trying to escape.

However, locals saw them, followed them, and apprehended one; the other two were able to get away.

One of the residents stated, “Despite the fact that robbers have been terrorizing us here for some time, a girl who was heading to a nearby church reported seeing three young guys enter the building today as I was returning from work.

“It was the girl who later raised the alarm, which drew the attention of neighbours around, and immediately we saw them (the suspects) trying to escape.

While two of the suspects escaped, one of them was unlucky, as people hacked him to death.”

The body of the alleged thief has been evacuated and taken to the mortuary.

The Assistant Public Relations Officer for the State Command, Harry Ekwo, who confirmed the incident said: “No one has made any formal report of any church theft, although the police have evacuated the corpse and deposited it in a morgue.”
