Anxiety as Boko Haram writes Bingham University in Keffi

There was a commotion Thursday at Bingham University located along Abuja-Keffi road in Nasarawa State.

A parent informed NationWide Thursday evening that reliable security personnel in the school disclosed to her that Boko Haram wrote to the university authorities, informing of an imminent attack on the school if certain conditions were not met as soon as possible.

The parent told the medium that the school authorities rather than inform students of the troubling message from the terrorists told them that a new security arrangement has been put in place and that should they hear any alert, the students should stay back in their hostels and not come out.

The parent, who preferred anonymity because of the implications on her ward, said she and a lot of other parents have gone to pick their wards from the university.

“As I speak with you, I am driving out of Bingham University with my daughter. Many parents also came to the school this evening to take their children away.

“I was alerted by a co-parent to rush to the university. On getting there this evening, everywhere is in panic mode. We were told that Boko Haram wrote to the school authorities, making some demands with a threat to attack the school if their demands were not met.

“But the most annoying thing is that instead of alerting the parents, the school authorities are downplaying the whole thing because of monetary considerations.

“My ward told me when I got here this evening that the school authorities put out a notice today, saying new security measures have been put in place and that should they hear any alarm from the internal security, they should stay back in their hostels and not come out.

“Can you just imagine that? These people want to sacrifice people’s children because of financial considerations.

“Is it because of the few security personnel they have at the gate with inferior guns that they would use to repel Boko Haram attack? This is very painful,” she said.

According to her, many students are still in the school because their parents are yet to hear of the Boko Haram threat.

“Do you know that the authorities of Bingham University did not attempt to tell students the truth nor send messages to their parents? They are trying to manage the situation by hoarding the information from parents,” which is very dangerous,” she said.
