Police issue safety warning as 4 lives lost in Gombe drowning incidents

At least four people have lost their lives in separate drowning incidents across Gombe State in recent days, prompting the state police command to issue a public safety advisory warning residents about the dangers of unprotected water bodies during the rainy season.
According to the police, the incidents occurred in three local government areas of the state, stressing that most of the victims were children and young persons who reportedly drowned in rivers, erosion sites, and open water channels following heavy rainfall.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, described the deaths as tragic and avoidable.
He said, “These unfortunate incidents have brought to light the urgent need for increased public awareness and preventive action.

We are calling on parents, guardians, school authorities, and community leaders to take proactive steps in protecting vulnerable individuals, especially children, from hazardous water environments.
“Recently, the command recorded four incidents at various parts of the state namely; Hayin kwarin-Misau Akko LGA, Bojude Kwami LGA, Bajoga Funakaye LGA and Difa Yamaltu Deba LGA, involving individuals, especially children and young persons, who have drowned in rivers, erosion sites, and unprotected water channels.”
The police advised residents to avoid swimming in open or unregulated water bodies, particularly during the rainy season when currents can become dangerously strong and unpredictable.
Children should not be allowed to play outdoors during rainfall or near rivers and erosion channels.
“Communities must also take responsibility by installing warning signs and erecting barricades around known danger zones,” he added.
He also cautioned the public against walking, driving, or attempting to cross flooded areas, noting that the depth and strength of such waters are often deceptive.

“Any uncovered or dangerous erosion sites or drainage systems should be reported promptly to local authorities for swift intervention,” he added.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urged residents to work collaboratively with law enforcement and local agencies to ensure a safer rainy season.
“The loss of even one life is too many. We must all do our part to prevent further tragedies,” he said.
