Atleast 4 homes shattered, 11 business ventures destroyed in renewed communal clash in Adamawa
At least 4 households and 11 business centers have been destroyed in a new round of fighting between the Waja and Lunguda ethnic groups in Adamawa State.
Following the latest altercation, which took place in the late hours of Monday, January 2, the Adamawa State Police Command stated on Tuesday that at least four (4) homes and 11 business ventures were set on fire.
The usual site of conflict between the Waja and Lunguda people took place in the area where the two ethnic groups are most prevalent, Lafiya town in Lamurde Local Government Area.
According to sources, a new altercation broke out on Monday between 6 and 7 p.m., and hoodlums set fire to homes, businesses, and other properties as a result.
Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, who disclosed that normalcy has since returned to the area, said the Command has commenced investigation and, in due course, those behind the incident will be brought to book. He further confirmed that Commissioner of Police Sikiru Akande had visited the scene of the incident.
According to DAILY POST, the Waja-Lugunda dispute has been an ongoing issue that occurs annually, and occasionally more than once. The dispute over land ownership was the source of the animosity.
The crisis has deepened over the years and created a climate of suspicions that undermined efforts by governments, NGOs and well-meaning individuals to resolve it in the past.
