Attack off Yemen: 3 crew members missing, 4 badly burned on Barbados-flagged vessel

In a distressing incident off the coast of Yemen today, the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier, True Confidence, faced an attack resulting in the disappearance of three crew members and severe burns to four others, according to a reliable shipping source.

The vessel, dealing with significant damage, is believed to have been hit by a missile, as indicated by the ship’s owner, presuming the missile originated from Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The ship appears to have been abandoned, and reports from a British monitoring agency suggest coalition forces are providing support following the attack.

Despite no immediate claims of responsibility, it’s worth noting that Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have engaged in a series of drone and missile attacks against international commercial shipping since mid-November, heightening concerns about maritime security in the region.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency received a report of the incident occurring 54 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s port city of Aden. While authorities are actively investigating, specific details about the nature and extent of the attack remain undisclosed.

A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the sighting of smoke emanating from the True Confidence. Additionally, a lifeboat was observed in the water near the vessel, adding to the complexity and urgency of the situation.

The development raises concerns about the safety of maritime activities in the region, prompting a closer examination of security measures and responses to such incidents.
