Autopsy: Police deny claim on Brekete Family, insist Erasmus not tortured to death

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has refuted a claim alleging that operatives of the command tortured one Erasmus Emhenya to death in Nyanya police station.

Erasmus’ mother made an allegation on Tuesday when she appeared on the Brekete Family radio and television programme in Abuja.

According to her, Erasmus, who died at the Nyanya police station on April 6, 2023, was arrested alongside other residents during a raid following the murder of a young lady.

She claimed that while other suspects were released on bail after a few hours in custody, the police refused to free her son, adding that she was denied access to see Erasmus until she learnt that the son had died in the station.

She further claimed that an autopsy, which was later conducted on Erasmus’ remains, revealed that her son died as a result of injuries sustained from the alleged torture.

However, a statement issued on Thursday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, debunked the allegation, stressing that the unfortunate incident was diligently investigated and the deceased was not tortured to death.

According to the PPRO, discrete investigations were conducted to determine the remote and immediate cause of death of the deceased with an autopsy was carried out, which confirmed that the deceased was not tortured to death as alleged.

The command called on all interested parties who wished to know the outcome of the autopsy reports and investigations to visit its headquarters in Garki, Abuja through the office of the PPRO.
