Bandits abduct bride, bridesmaids, eight others

Story by Okafor Vivian

In a shocking attack, armed bandits have abducted a bride-to-be, her bridesmaid, and eight other residents from Chacho village in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The raid occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, just hours before the bride’s wedding was scheduled to take place.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived under the cover of darkness, opening fire and causing panic in the community before whisking away their victims. Several residents fled into nearby bushes to escape the onslaught.

The incident has thrown the village into mourning and fear, with the planned wedding abruptly canceled. Among the abducted are reportedly family members and well wishers gathered to support the bride.

Chacho village is known as the hometown of the Sokoto State Commissioner for Special Duties, Shehu Alhaji Chacho, underscoring the audacity of the attack. The abduction follows other kidnappings in the region, highlighting the growing insecurity across Sokoto State.

Attempts to reach police authorities for confirmation were unsuccessful, and no ransom demands have been made public. Community members are appealing for urgent intervention to secure the release of the victims.

The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of rural communities in northwest Nigeria, with gatherings and celebrations increasingly targeted by criminal elements.
