Bauchi tertiary institutions give govt 2 weeks ultimatum to embark on strike

Story from Ahmad SAKA, Bauchi

The Bauchi State tertiary institutions under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) have given the state government two weeks ultimatum to embark on strike if their demands were not looked into.

Dr Abdulkadir Mohammed, JAC Chairman in the state said this in a statement distributed to reporters in Bauchi.

He noted that all avenues to settle their grievances with the state government have failed over the years.

“It is on record we had a series of correspondents, informal contacts, meetings, press conferences, ultimatum and to some extent a strike.

“Unfortunately none of these measures addressed even one out of the several issues at stake,” he said.

He said the action was to press home their demands including payment of outstanding salary arrears to its members.

He said the committee also rejected the enrollment of its members into the proposed Contributory Pension Scheme, and the deductions for the Health Insurance Contributory Scheme.

The tertiary institutions called for immediate payment of outstanding salaries, resumption of promotion implementation and annual increments.

“We also call for the implementation of the consequential adjustments which do not finalise with organised labour.

“We are also calling on the state government and the general public to understand that our concern is to have our problem solved and we are tired of rhetorics that do not hold water,” he said.

The Chairman also called on well-meaning individuals within and outside the state to prevail on the state government to look into their demands with a view to averting the breakdown of industrial harmony in the tertiary institutions in the state.

Neptune Prime reports that the institutions are Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), Aminu Saleh College of Education (ASCOE), College for Legal and Islamic Studies (CLIS), College of Agriculture, Bauchi and the College of Education, Kangere.
