Over 32,000 Yobe schoolgirls receive ₦1.3 billion in education grants

Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

In a major push to advance girls’ education, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has inaugurated the disbursement of ₦1.295 billion in scholastic grants to 32,382 adolescent girls across the state.

The launch ceremony, held on Tuesday at the Government House Event Centre in Damaturu, is a cornerstone of the state’s Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.

The programme targets female students from low-income families, providing each beneficiary with a ₦4,000 conditional cash transfer per term to directly support their schooling.

Addressing state officials and community leaders, Governor Buni framed the initiative as a critical investment in the state’s future.

He explained that the financial support is designed to reduce dropout rates, ease the burden on families, and allow girls to concentrate on their studies without economic distraction.

“This is not merely financial assistance; it is an investment in our daughters’ futures and in the prosperity of Yobe State,” the governor stated.

He encouraged recipients to use the funds responsibly for their educational development and to remain committed to their academic goals.

Governor Buni also praised the State Ministry of Basic Education and the AGILE project coordinators for their role in implementing the programme and urged them to maintain rigorous oversight to ensure its continued success.

The AGILE grants are conditional, meaning they are linked to regular school attendance and enrollment, a strategy proven to boost educational performance and create pathways toward greater economic opportunity for young women.
