Bayelsa student drowns in creek over ₦300 bet

A 200-level Chemical Engineering student from the Federal University, Otuoke, has reportedly drowned in the Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa following a ₦300 bet.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning, and as of Monday, the victim’s body had not been recovered, and his identity remained unknown.

Sources familiar with the situation, who spoke anonymously, revealed that the student had bet his coursemates that he could swim across the creek. Each person contributed ₦300 to the wager. However, while attempting the swim, the student went under the water and has not been seen since.

A fellow student of the university confirmed the incident, stating, “Yesterday morning, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river. They each contributed ₦300. While swimming, he went under, and he has been missing ever since.”

Efforts by journalists to reach the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mercy Ekott, for comment were unsuccessful, as she did not answer calls.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, when contacted, stated that he had not received any information about the incident. He was unable to provide details on the student’s identity but promised to provide updates once more information became available.
