Nigerian footballer Lawal dies in Uganda accident

There has been an outpouring of tributes from Nigerian and Ugandan football clubs following the tragic death of former Wikki Tourists, Nasarawa United player, and ex-junior international, Abubakar Lawal.

Lawal, 29, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala, Uganda, on Monday.

Reports from Uganda confirm that Lawal, who played for Vipers SC, died in the accident. The club issued a statement expressing their sorrow, saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning. His body has been transferred to a medical facility for a postmortem examination, and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, friends, fans, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Other clubs, including those he previously played for, have also expressed their condolences. Nigerian club Nasarawa United wrote, “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal. May God grant him eternal rest.”

The Ugandan club UPDF FC also shared their condolences, saying, “The entire UPDF FC family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Vipers SC forward Abubakar Lawal, who passed away in a motorbike accident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Vipers SC, the family of the deceased, and the entire football community.”

Lawal’s career took him from Wikki Tourists to Nasarawa United in 2019, before joining As Kigali in 2020. After two years in Rwanda, he moved to Uganda to join Vipers SC.
