Blackout cripples Presidential Villa, 7 Abuja districts as vandals strike power grid
Power supply to the Presidential Villa and other parts of Abuja has been disrupted following the vandalisation of a critical 132kV transmission line. Areas affected include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, and Mabushi.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed that the vandals also carted away a 40-meter section of 1x500mm XLPE conductor, which supplies bulk electricity to the Central Area substation in Katampe.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. She revealed that the vandalism affected eight distribution feeders, cutting off more than 60% of Abuja’s electricity supply.
“This critical infrastructure was vandalised near the Menillum Park axis of Abuja, disrupting power delivery across significant parts of the city,” Mbah said.

The TCN has deployed a team of engineers to repair the damaged cables and restore power to the affected areas. Mbah appealed to residents for patience, stating that efforts were being made to resolve the issue promptly.
Expressing concern over the recurring incidents of cable vandalism, Mbah urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and assist in protecting transmission infrastructure.
“The vandalism of critical infrastructure not only affects power delivery but also hampers the nation’s progress. We call on all residents to help safeguard these assets,” she added.
Cable vandalism has become a significant issue, disrupting power supply across the country. This latest incident highlights the urgent need for stricter measures and community involvement to curb such criminal activities.
The TCN assured the public of its commitment to restoring normalcy and ensuring the security of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
