Boko Haram: 110 women in Borno renounce terrorism, embrace peace

In a significant move towards reconciliation, 110 women previously influenced by Boko Haram’s ideology have renounced terrorism and embraced peace, thanks to a deradicalisation programme in Borno State.

This development was revealed by Hamsatu Allamin, the Executive Secretary of the Al-Amin Foundation for Peace and Development, during a meeting with Borno’s Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Lawan Wakilbe, in Maiduguri.

Allamin stated that the women, once misled by extremist interpretations of Islamic teachings, have now become advocates for peace. She noted that the programme not only transformed their beliefs but also empowered them to counter terrorist ideologies within their communities.

“Some of the women have taken steps to further their Western education, highlighting their dedication to peace and societal growth,” Allamin said.

She also expressed concerns about the children of the deradicalised women, stressing the need for targeted interventions to help them overcome trauma and integrate into society.

Responding, Wakilbe acknowledged the plight of over 607,000 conflict-affected children in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, underscoring the importance of education and support to prevent exploitation.

He pledged the government’s support for the foundation’s efforts and encouraged leveraging the influence of the deradicalised women to inspire others to abandon violence and embrace peace.
