The traditional ruler of Olayinka Community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, has reportedly died while in captivity after weeks of efforts to secure his release failed.

The monarch’s death was confirmed on Monday through an emotional voice message released by a member of the community committee that had been coordinating rescue efforts.

Oba Aweda was abducted by gunmen who reportedly demanded a ransom of N21 million, two brand-new motorcycles, and a jerrycan of petrol before they would release him.

In the audio message obtained by Sahara Reporters, the committee member announced the monarch’s passing, describing it as an act of divine will despite extensive attempts by family members, community leaders, clerics, and other stakeholders to secure his freedom.

“Allah, in His mercy, says in the Holy Qur’an that we all belong to Him and to Him we shall return. Our beloved father, His Royal Highness Alhaji Salman Olatunji Aweda, the monarch of Olayinka, has answered the call of his Creator,” he said.

He added that all efforts made by relatives, residents, community committees, and Islamic clerics had ultimately failed, noting that “the will of God has happened.”

Despite the fact that the monarch’s remains have not been recovered, the committee announced that Islamic funeral prayers would be held at 8 a.m. at the Epe Muslim Community in Lagos.

The committee explained that Islamic burial rites can be observed even when the deceased’s body is unavailable, in accordance with religious provisions.

Residents of Olayinka, both Muslims and Christians, were urged to accept the development with faith and unity.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kwara State Government nor the police authorities had issued an official statement regarding the monarch’s death.
