The Nigerian Army has closed 4 roads to launch Operation Fireball against Boko Haram terrorists in North-east.

The over a decade long insurgency has claimed 32,000 lives with property worth about N3.42 trillion in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. The closures of roads were to commence Monday, October 12, 2020, from 6 am to 3 pm daily, until the military operations are completed. These were disclosed by Brigadier-General MLD Saraso, in a statement issued on Sunday, 11 October 2020 in Maiduguri.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has said the launching of “Operation Fireball,” is the final onslaught against Boko Haram insurgency.

Directives of roads closures were also copied to 7 Division Nigerian Army and the Sector Commanders of Operation Lafiya Dole.
According to Saraso; “In line with HQ Theatre Command plan for the conduct of Operation Fireball, all roads surrounding Timbuktu triangle will be closed to normal traffic.”

The Timbuktu triangle comprises 132-kilometre Maiduguri/Ngamdu/Damaturu road, 198km-Maiduguri/Buni Gari/Biu road, 187km-Maiduguri/Damboa/Biu road and 147km-Ngamdu/Goniri/Damboa road.

The closed roads are located in Borno and Yobe states, serving 8 Local Government Areas in the sub-region. The 664-kilometre triangle also encircles Sambisa Forest, one of the
3 main hideouts of insurgents in North-east.
The 2 other hideouts of terrorists include the Mandara Mountains and Lake Chad region in the northern part of Borno state.

According to security experts yesterday in Maiduguri, the insurgents have about a dozen crossing points along the 4 closed roads. The insurgents cross the roads between Mainok and Jakana villages, Ngamdu cattle routes, Firgi crossing point and the Bulabulin points
along Bama/Gwoza road in Borno state.

Lieutenant Buratai said this decision is necessary for the final destruction of the criminal insurgents and no excuse will be tolerated in the accomplishment of Operation Fireball objectives to end the war.

He qually told field commanders not to rest on their oars, as there is the need to maintain a positive disposition and attitude toward improving on ongoing operations.
