Boko Haram terrorists kidnap many travellers on Maiduguri-Kano Highway

Story from Usman UMAR

Terrorists suspected to be Boko Haram militants have kidnapped passengers on the Maiduguri/Kano Highway.

The insurgents attacked between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari village near Auno, which is along the Damaturu highway at around 5:50 pm on Monday.

They reportedly blocked the road and forcibly abducted some passengers.

The incident resulted in numerous travellers and commuters being stuck on both sides of the busy road. They had to go back to Benishek and Auno.

“There was an incident between Mannanari and Garin Kuturu where some Boko Haram fighters came out to block vehicles and abduct passengers.

“The exact number of abductees is unknown at the moment, but there was definitely an abduction on Monday evening,” a local source revealed.

Locals described how several commercial drivers sought refuge in their community briefly while the militants were operating between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari villages. They appeared with three wheelbarrows, possibly in search of food supplies.

The exact number of abductees is unknown, but some drivers returned to Maiduguri and then back before military reinforcement arrived.

A passenger, who preferred not to be identified, mentioned that he and others were stuck for hours.

“We were travelling from Maiduguri to Kano when the driver heard about the attack and decided to take a different route.

“We have been waiting for the military to clear the road, but we have no idea when that will happen. We are stranded here,” he said.
