Story from Najibullahi ADAMU, Gombe

Residents of Bomala community of Akko local government area of Gombe State have cried out over the escalation of erosion in the area.

Speaking with newsmen Friday, an elder in the community and traditional title holder, Babangida Musa Usman, lamented that erosion poses serious threats to the people of the area adding that it destroys houses every rainy season.

According to him, the problem continues to escalate every passing day thereby destroying more houses in the community.

The traditional title holder uncovered that the eroding lands also cause serious transportation challenges in the area as the way linking places is washed out, breaking into deep holes.

He noted that some residents have had to mount on donkeys, motorcycles and bicycles to move in and out of the valleys because they are awash with water even as he added that some of the ways are completely impassable.

Usman appealed to the state government to bring succour to the community by controlling the erosion and repairing the damaged places.

He also pleaded with the government to construct a road that would link them to neighbouring towns such as Kumo and Garko that the community is well planned and requires no demolition of houses for road construction.

Responding to the matter, the General Manager of the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency (GOSEPA), Mohammed Ahmed Kumo, said he had inspected the community and assessed the damages caused by the erosion.

He said that the agency would make consultations on what to do.
