Iran Sets July 9 for the burial of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Iran has fixed July 9 for the burial of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with state media announcing plans for a series of nationwide funeral ceremonies ahead of his interment in the holy city of Mashhad.

According to official reports, funeral rites will commence in Tehran on July 4 before proceeding to Qom on July 7. Khamenei will eventually be laid to rest at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, his birthplace and one of the most revered religious sites in Iran.

Authorities said the ceremonies are expected to draw large crowds from across the country, reflecting Khamenei’s influence on Iran’s political and religious landscape during his decades-long leadership.

The burial arrangements come months after the former supreme leader’s death, with officials previously citing security concerns and ongoing regional tensions as reasons for delaying the funeral proceedings.

Khamenei served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for more than three decades and played a central role in shaping the country’s domestic and foreign policies. His leadership spanned significant political, economic and geopolitical developments within the Islamic Republic.
